Question about dogs and anal glands?

I have a question. My dog (daschund) needs to have her anal gland emptied pretty regularly. Normaly we just let the groomer handle it. However, we have been told that Vets do a more thorough job. Unfortunately, the Vet visit costs much more and does not include a shampoo & trim. Can someone expand on this subject?
