Do transitions expire?

I've had the same pair of glasses for about 10 years now. The original lens and frame. The summer started and this year i noticed that the lens don't get dark any more. Infact they are suck in an inbetween phase. They are mildly tinted even indoors. In the sun they remain the same. Why did they stop working now after 10 years?
